Use plenty of wallpaper paste as this will help you move the paper into position getting pattern matches etc. Follow the instructions provided with the paper; some wallpapers are paste the paper and others are paste the wall. Personally I think paste the wall is a lot simpler. You can get wallpaper paste which has a coloured dye in it which helps you check that you have applied enough in the correct areas. Apply paste for each panel you are hanging with an extra couple of inches of the adjacent panel to avoid getting paste on the panel you have just hung.
During the installation process, use a wallpaper brush or a smoothing tool to gently press the wallpaper onto the wall, working out any air bubbles or wrinkles. Take your time and work in small sections to ensure a professional-looking finish.
Finally, use a wallpaper roller to smooth the edges and trim the top and bottom with a stanley knife or scalpel with fresh blades and a straight edge for clean, precise cuts.
You can buy peel and stick wallpapers now which are perfect for renters. No paste is required for them so follow the directions above for cutting the paper and then simply peel and stick onto the wall taking care to get the pattern matched.
Some wallpapers are expensive and if you have a difficult area to paper (for example lots of doors, windows, alcoves etc) it may be more cost effective to hire a professional decorator rather than risk ruining the paper and having to order more.
